The Controversial Interview |
The first question which crops up is 'How did he arrange this meeting ?' .
A man branded as a terrorist by the World (read US & UN) is definitely inaccessible and protected with much gusto. So how was he allowed access ? Vaidik's reply to this is "When I was in Pakistan, the media criticism of Hafiz Saeed in India came up for discussion. It was then that a Pakistani journalist asked me if I would like to meet Saeed in person. I agreed and a call was immediately made to fix the meeting" . But I am still sceptical as to how can it be done at such short notice. Another issue which crops up is 'why did he even want to meet him ? ' .Yes, i agree journalists over the years have taken risks do take interviews. Prominent examples include interviews of Adolf Hitler conducted by H R Knickerbocker for Chicago Tribune H G Wells of Stalin. It was all done in the line of professional duty. At that time the persons concerned were enemies of a particular country and not terrorists. This man,Saeed is a completely different case. He is the enemy of the whole world and therefore Vaidik's tall claims of putting himself in danger and resolving conflicts through talks are invalid. This issue puts vaidik on a morally shaky ground.
Forgetting all the above if vaidik as he claims did it for getting to know Hafiz's ideology then where is the Interview ? Vaidik only gave snippets in his interview with major news channels and newspapers.A journalist interviewing a terrorist and the resulting interview should have been a major news but Vaidik has not published his interview in full . This Interview was a golden chance to question saeed about his involvements. He could have and definitely should have questioned Saeed about his role in instigating terrorists attacks on Indian soil. He also could have probed him about his role in Mumbai terrorist attack. But from whatever he has supplied to the news channels, he has not asked these important questions at all. All he has revealed is remarks about Narendra Modi's marital status,Saeed's 3 wives, whether he would protest against a Modi trip to Pakistan etc and other comparatively insignificant questions. This speaks poorly of his journalistic qualities.
Therefore I have no hesitation in calling his misadventure a Foolhardy one and one man's unfortunate attempt to hog publicity
