In the degree course, before the final written exams start we are offered a holiday lasting 3 to 4 weeks long to study and revise for the exams.Yes,even i start preparing during those holidays but its not exam preparation but its more like dress rehearsal of the vacations which follow the exams.
Since the beginning of my engineering years i have never understood the logic of preparation holidays or "PLs" (Preparation Leave) . Typically, after the oral exams get over, these holidays start and last for around half a month before the actual written exams start. Now,my dear readers here would think Yes, We need preparation time so why not ? But the cliche here is even during the exams we are offered around 4-5 days of holidays per paper. So, as the saying goes "Too many holidays spoil the preparation" ( or was it too many cooks spoil the broth ? ) Anyway, the point i want to make here is we really don't need these excess holidays. To be true to all of you,its kind of fun,a long break before exams which takes the stress out of the mind and body but trust me after enduring 6 PLs and currently enjoying the 7th one it does get boring after a while.
Before the holidays every one of my friends plan to study during the PLs and promise themselves to complete the portion, study more than ever blah, blah the usual stuff....but it never works out and it has never worked out at least for me (I am leaving those holy divine spirits who can study 15 hours day and night ).If by chance due to bad scheduling of oral exams the PLs are shorter despite all my cribbing, i am the first one to retort that "how the hell are we supposed to give the exams if there are no PLs ? " Well,to a sane person that might seem that i am complaining about not getting study time but what i actually mean by my question is "How the hell are we supposed to play games,go to native places,go on treks if PLs are not given ? ".
Now actually i plan on changing myself every time around a PL comes, planning and chalking out study time tables but sadly they never work out yet.I plan on waking up early but that flops right from the first day. Then, the procrastination comes into play and thoughts like there are still 15 days remaining, lets study later creep in and one loses track of days that go.Then during the last few days of PL,seeing the exam so near i wake up and then call up friends to check out how much they have done (its just a matter of getting superiority complex when one hears the friend has also not started studying). A typical conversation goes like this :
A : Hey,How are studies going ?
B : Man,i was not able to start. It was Sachin's last test you know, how could i have missed it ? What about you Bro ?
A :(though he has not seen the test but just want to give a reason) i was busy watching too.I am really worried now how are we going to complete the portion.
B: Even i am worried too,how are we even going to cope up with this much amount of distractions ?
From distractions i remembered, If you have noticed every DAMN football or cricket extravaganza has to happen either during the PLs or the exams. So these PLs i believe(exceptions : a few pure souls) are just plain vacations before exams. In these holidays one can't study with so many distractions or play wholeheartedly because of tension of exams playing on the mind.
But hey, whatever studies which one manages to do in the PLs really helps to score marks in the exams. So they are not a complete waste of time.If you were looking for a moral to this story of mine, then sorry this was just supposed to lighten the mood of my comrades (superiority complex remember ?) so that they study harder and score good marks this semester.
####BEST OF LUCK TO ALL MY ENGINEERING FRIENDS.DO YOUR BEST TO ENJOY PLs AND SCORE MARKS TOO ####
